Active Ingredient in Marijuana Kills Brain Cancer Cells

"WEDNESDAY, April 1 (HealthDay News) -- New research out of Spain suggests that THC -- the active ingredient in marijuana -- appears to prompt the death of brain cancer cells."

"Explaining that the introduction of THC into the brain triggers a cellular self-digestion process known as "autophagy," study co-author Guillermo Velasco said his team has isolated the specific pathway by which this process unfolds, and noted that it appears "to kill cancer cells, while it does not affect normal cells."

"Velasco is with the department of biochemistry and molecular biology in the School of Biology at Complutense University in Madrid. The findings were published in the April issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation."

Experts say finding worth further study... READ FULL ARTICLE US News and World Report.

Jeopardy answer of the year: What are Brain Tumors???

Do YOU know....?

Brain Tumors, also known as brain cancer, start within the substance of the brain, spinal cord or nerves. Some tumors which arise from the brain or spine coverings (meninges) are also considered primary brain tumors. Metastatic brain tumors have spread from cancer in other parts of the body, most frequently from the lungs, breast and colon.

TYPES of BRAIN TUMORS

Brain Tumor Symptoms
Depending on the location and size of the tumor, symptoms experienced by each patient may vary. Most of the common symptoms are due to increased intracranial pressure as the growing tumor affects surrounding structures:
  • Frequent headaches (reported by 50% of patients)
  • Blurry vision
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Personality or cognitive changes

Other symptoms are site-specific, including seizures, speech impairment, weakness or numbness on one side and problems with coordination, balance or mobility.

The Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is an isosceles triangle such that the ratio of the hypotenuse a to base b is equal to the golden ratio, a/b=phi. From the above figure, this means that the triangle has vertex angle equal to:

 theta=2sin^(-1)(b/(2a))=2sin^(-1)(1/(2phi))=1/5pi, or 36 degrees.

The Revolution will be mimeographed: Fuck You: A Magazine of the Arts

In 1962, Fug-Man Ed Sanders founded Fuck You: A Magazine of the Arts. With his credo: "I'll print anything," Sanders produced thirteen mimeographed issues of the legendary journal- publishing work by Tuli Kupferberg, Charles Olson, Philip Whalen, Allen Ginsberg, Frank O'Hara, Julian Beck, Herbert Huncke, Gary Snyder, Diane DiPrima, William Burroughs, Leroi Jones (AKA Amiri Baraka), Robert Creeley, Ted Berrigan, Joe Brainard, and Andy Warhol.
Police eventually raided the Fug/ Fuck You HQ:
Peace Eye Bookstore, charging Sanders with obscenity. Notoriety generated by the case led to his face on the cover of Life Magazine (February 17, 1967), which proclaimed Sanders "a leader of New York's Other Culture."

Fug Sanders' 1968 POETRY BOOK OF THE YEAR & other "PRAISE" by Bob Holman

And now, with the deaths of Ginsberg, Burroughs, Huncke,
I open up the pages of the new Sanders book of poetry, 1968: A History in Verse…
In 1968 rock and politics shared the air, and Ed’s playful, incisive language serves as time machine: if you were there (1968 as Place), it will cause you to resurrect that other world; if you weren’t, you’ll never believe that that year was squeezed into a year..."
-Bob Holman on 1968: A History in Verse* by Ed Sanders

Check out Bob Holman’s Praise Ed Sanders Poem-  first performed at the 2001 Woodstock Poetry Festival, where the city crowned Ed Sanders Poet Laureate of Woodstock.

BORN IN A KOSHER MEAT STORE: THE FUgS STORY.

On a cold December day, in converted Kosher meat store, in 1964, Ed Sanders, editor of the infamous Fuck You: A Magazine of the Arts, and Tuli Kupferberg, Allen Ginsberg’s favorite fatalist, formed The Fugs. The band earned immediate notoriety (and F.B.I. files!) for lewd performances rife with political satire.
In 1965, the band released their first album, The Village Fugs, and headed out on a tour in protest of the Vietnam War- performing “War Kills Babies” and “Kill For Peace” alongside such counterculture greats as Frank Zappa, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Jefferson Airplane.
That was only the first year! The next 44 are even crazier!- including a Life Magazine cover, a letter bomb, a Grammy, J. Edgar Hoover, and Thurston Moore (seriously dudes).
